Description
Hibiscus Whole Flower
Scientific Name: Hibiscus sabdariffa
Common Names: Bissap • Roselle • Jamaica
Hibiscus Whole Flower is a traditional caffeine-free herbal tea made from carefully dried whole Hibiscus sabdariffa calyces.
When brewed, the whole calyces release a brilliant ruby-red infusion with naturally fruity, tangy notes often compared to cranberry. The whole-flower form offers a traditional way to enjoy hibiscus and creates a visually striking brew that is equally enjoyable hot or iced.
Hibiscus is widely enjoyed across West Africa, where it is commonly known as Bissap. It can be steeped on its own or combined with mint, ginger, citrus, or your preferred sweetener to create a flavorful herbal drink.
Brewing Method
- Hot Tea: Add 1-2 tablespoons of dried hibiscus calyces to 1 cup (8 oz) of boiling water. Steep for 5-10 minutes, then strain. Sweeten if desired.
- Cold Brew: Add 1/2 cup of hibiscus to 1 liter of cold water. Refrigerate for 5-8 hours, then strain and serve over ice.
- Stronger Brew: Increase the amount of hibiscus or steep time for a more concentrated flavor, ideal for syrups or mocktails.
More Ways to Enjoy Hibiscus
Hibiscus Whole Flower is remarkably versatile beyond a traditional cup of tea. Brew a concentrated infusion for homemade hibiscus syrups, mocktails, iced beverages, or sparkling drinks. For a different flavor profile, pair the calyces with fresh mint, ginger, citrus peel, or your favorite sweetener.
Serve it warm for a bold herbal infusion, chill it over ice for a refreshing beverage, or use the whole calyces in syrups, mocktails, and other culinary creations.
