Sehhaw (Kinkeliba) – Traditional West African Herbal Tea
Scientific Name: Combretum micranthum G. Don
Also Known As: Kinkeliba
A Treasured Herbal Tradition from Senegal
Sehhaw (Kinkeliba) is a traditional West African herbal tea that has been enjoyed in Senegal and neighboring regions for generations. Made from the dried leaves of Combretum micranthum, Sehhaw brews into a naturally golden infusion with a smooth, earthy character, subtle nutty notes, and a clean, refreshing finish.
Harvested from the savanna landscapes of Senegal, the leaves have long been prepared as an everyday herbal beverage in homes and communities. Sehhaw is naturally caffeine-free, making it easy to enjoy in the morning, after meals, or later in the day.
The plant naturally contains botanical compounds such as flavonoids and polyphenols, and its long history of use has made it one of Senegal’s most recognized traditional infusions
During the colonial period, French settlers and visitors in Senegal also came to appreciate Kinkeliba and referred to the infusion as “La Tisane de Longue Vie,” or “The Infusion of Long Life.” The expression reflected the high regard in which the herbal drink was held and became another part of its cultural history.
The Meaning Behind the Name Sehhaw
In Senegal, Kinkeliba is also affectionately known as Sehhaw, a name closely connected with local language, culture, and tradition.
According to Senegalese oral tradition, Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, founder of the Mouride Brotherhood, encouraged people to use the traditional Wolof name Sehhaw rather than relying only on the French name Kinkeliba. The story reflects the importance of preserving local identity, language, and cultural heritage.
For generations, families have gathered around cups of Sehhaw for hospitality, conversation, and everyday enjoyment. That tradition continues today, with the tea served warm, lightly sweetened, or chilled for a refreshing herbal drink.
A West African Tea for Everyday Enjoyment
Sehhaw has a mild, approachable flavor that works well on its own or with honey, sugar, mint, lemon, or other traditional additions. Its naturally caffeine-free character makes it a versatile herbal tea for any time of day.
